Redditch students cooking up a storm at Trinity High School

REDDITCH students will be cooking up a storm in a new cookery club, aimed at helping youngsters focus their minds on something new and learn a skill that will benefit them in later life.

The scheme, which is the brainchild of PCSO Yasmin El-bir, will work in partnership with Trinity High School.

The stove will be on every Wednesday afternoon over a course of 12 weeks with the class running three times a month.

Each three-week period will focus on a particular food theme as the course, which has received £300 worth of funding from Sainsbury’s and £50 from Tesco, continues.

Yasmin, who used to be a chef and worked with Masterchef judge Marcus Wareing, hopes the workshops will offer students something more advanced than what they may learn at school and provide a foundation for a future career while, at the very least, teaching them how to fend for themselves.

“The aim is to inspire these youngsters to do something with their time rather than potentially hang around on street corners or worse become involved in shoplifting or drugs.”

Yasmin added she hopes the sessions will help the teenagers see the police in a ‘good light’.

“Hopefully this project will help to break down the barriers between the police and the local school kids who may have an initial dislike and misunderstanding of the police,” said Yarmin.

“Rather than telling them to stop loitering in the bus station we are here to help.”

During the sessions Yasmin, who has a First Class BA degree in Culinary Arts Management, will teach students knife skills, time management and work space management as well as how to work as part of a team.

On the menu is how to cook up the perfect steak with sauce, fresh fish with homemade sauces, lemon and lime souffle with white chocolate sauce and much more.
