Safe places for vulnerable people

Redditch Editorial 6th May, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

VULNERABLE people in Redditch will be able find a quiet place to make them feel safe under a new scheme.

The Safe Place project, which will be launched on May 13 in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, will provide help for anyone who feels insecure or overwhelmed while out and about.

Businesses taking part in the scheme in the town centre and across Redditch will display a sticker in their window and will have trained staff to provide support and reassurance.

Whilst anyone can use the spots during business opening hours, residents are also being encouraged to register to the scheme and receive a special contact card.

Redditch is one of five towns and cities in the county to take part in Safe Place which has been funded by the West Mercia Police’ crime commissioner.

Ken Hazeldene, chair of North Worcestershire Hate Incident Partnership said: “When alone, a busy town centre or shopping area can feel daunting and if someone is feeling particularly vulnerable for whatever reason, these environments can feel totally overwhelming.

“This new scheme is excellent because it means that people can take a break from the hustle and bustle, compose themselves and regain a feeling of security ready to take on shops without fear.”
