STAFF and students at a Redditch school are feeling out of this world after being awarded the gold standard for using science, space and astronomy to inspire its pupils.

Birchensale Middle School have been awarded the gold standard Space Education Quality Mark (SEQM) for using space to enrich the curriculum as well as building strong links with local schools, universities and primary science based organisations such as the Ogden Trust, to raise the profile of science in the local community

Mr Wilkes, who was appointed Head of Science at the school Batchley around two years ago, has been using ‘space’ as a vehicle to inspire, excite and immerse pupils in all aspects of science.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Mr. Wilkes is very proud of all the staff and pupils who helped to achieve this award and looks forward to the success of our ever-growing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) club and opportunities in the near future to help us gain even more recognition for our outstanding science.”

The school is now looking ahead to fuel more community science events and plans more outreach with the local area and beyond.
