Redditch Editorial 14th Jan, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

SEVERE gales and torrential rain are set to batter the county tonight with forecasters warning there could be disruption to transport and power supplies.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather alerts for wind and rain in Worcestershire from 5pm today (Wednesday) until 6am tomorrow (Thursday) with gusts of more than 60mph expected.

The deep area of low pressure will also produce 20 to 30mm of rain as it sweeps eastwards overnight with up to 50mm possible over hills leading to the risk of minor flooding.

A chief forecaster at the Met Office said: “Another deep Atlantic low pressure system will approach northern Britain tonight and into Thursday.

“Across most of southern Britain, the strongest winds are expected from late evening through the nighttime period, particularly on and just ahead of a squally cold front, which will move east with time.

“As this continues eastwards, so the strongest of the winds should ease later.

“As well as the very strong winds, a band of squally rain is likely to sweep eastwards across many parts through the period.”
