Social group needs more men round the table

A SOCIAL group for men which has been running in Redditch for more than 60 years is appealing for new members to secure its future.

Redditch Round Table is an organisation aimed at men aged 18 to 45 and provides opportunities to take part in a range of activities as well as social events and fund-raising for charity.

The group is probably best known for its annual Santa tour, where it takes Father Christmas around various routes in Redditch during December, knocking on doors and collecting money for charity. That event alone raises about £8,000 a year which is then distributed to good causes. In the past groups including Carers’ Careline, Redditch Heart Safe and scout groups have benefited.

But membership has dwindled in recent years to just eight. Ideally it needs to be double that. There is also concern about the group’s sustainability with some members reaching the age they have to leave the table.

Kul Bwali, joint chairman of Redditch Round Table, said there were a number of benefits to joining the group.

“There’s a lot of misconceptions about Round Table and what it is. It’s basically a lot of fun, we have a lot of social events from dragon boat races and It’s A Knockout to meals out, and it also gives us an opportunity to give something back to the community.” he said.

“We also link up with other Round Tables in the region and so you get the chance to take part in activities you wouldn’t normally.

“People think it’s some major time commitment but it’s only a couple of evenings a month and you don’t have to take part in everything.

“We’re an open membership organisation, there’s no referral process, and most of our events cost £10 so you don’t have to be a business owner to join, we’re open to anybody.”

Joining the organisation costs £70 a year and there is also an opportunity to take part in a three-month trial before formally becoming a member.
