Steaming back to vintage era

VINTAGE enthusiasts were rewarded after braving the weekend downpour with a showstopping Battle of Britain memorial flight.

The flypast on Sunday morning at The Astwood Bank Vintage Gathering by two Spitfires and two Hurricanes was a steaming success following fears the weather might see it cancelled.

Organiser Peter Waghorn said: “It put a smile on our faces. The crowd were really excited and it was a real showstopper.”

The memorial was always a gamble for the organisers with the forecast due to be a wet one.

“In our climate it’s always a risk organising outdoor events but we did reasonably well under the circumstances,” added Peter, who is chairman of North Worcestershire Vintage Tractor and Engine Club.

“We had quite low attendance on the Saturday but made up for it on the Sunday and our early indications are that we broke even so we are reasonably satisifed.”

Visitors enjoyed a whole host of vintage delights at SE Davis such as vintage tractors, classic cars and motorcycles and understandably, lots of steam.

Period caravans jostled for position alongside military vehicles from the 1940s and 50s and SE Davis’ own fantastic collection of vintage earthmoving machines.
