Steev's cycle odyssey for community first responders

A STUDLEY cyclist has clocked up over 150 miles and climbed 4,500 metres all in the name of his community’s First Responders.

Steev Ellson, director of Brock Charles Architects, embarked on the gruelling Coast to Coast challenge which saw him ride from Seascale in the west to the east coast of Whitby.

The iconic route took Steev from the mountainous Lake District, through the Yorkshire Dales, across the Vale of York and finally into the Northern Valleys of the North York Moors.

The challenge, in which hundreds of cyclists compete each year, is usually completed over four to five days but Steev pushed himself to the limit and crossed the finish line on the very same day he started.

“We completed it in just over ten hours,” Steev said. “Although one friend broke his wrist and had to be taken to hospital and another rode into a parked car, the ride itself was spectacular.

“The scenery of The Lakes and the Yorkshire Moors was as breathtaking as the 33 percent steep hills,” he added.

Along with five others, the director took on the challenge to raise awareness and much needed funding for Studley First Responders.

Speaking before the challenge, he added how the idea came to him after his neighbour’s daughter required urgent help following the birth of her first baby.

“They were the first on the scene, “he said. “Their quick arrival prevented the emergency becoming more serious and that was the inspiration to cycle across the country.

We need to keep the volunteer Responders available to the community.”
