SWIMMERS from across the region and beyond will be taking part in the third Special Olympics Redditch gala event.

The day tomorrow (Saturday) will see 13 teams including a nine-strong group from the borough joining in, mostly from the West Midlands with one from Bristol and one from Nantwich in Cheshire.

Starting at 1.50pm, there will be 84 heats including freestyles of between 25m and 200m, backstroke and butterfly of 25m and 50m, relays and a 100m individual medley.

Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded for the winners with participation ribbons for other placings.

The event will be opened by Mayor Pat Witherspoon and patron MP Karen Lumley will also be in attendance.

Ron Daykin from Special Olympics said: “Thanks to all our sponsors in helping us to make this event possible and to our volunteers in ensuring the gala runs smoothly.”
