THREE friends from Redditch are taking on the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the charity RoadPeace in memory of a dearly loved brother.
Peter Price was just 39 and planning to get married when a driver doing 93mph along the Hagley Road in Birmingham – a road with a 40mph speed limit – mowed him down in a hit and run incident.
The driver was caught and is now in prison serving a four and a half year sentence, a term increased by the Court of Appeal as Peter’s family felt the original sentence was far too lenient.
“Peter was killed on November 29, 2014 and the case concluded in March and throughout it all it was all about the driver, his character, what he was like, and I felt my brother was being lost,” said Peter’s sister Lucy Harrison, from Batchley.
On the anniversary of his death Lucy decided to do something positive in Peter’s memory and together with her friend Natalie Gamble and her dad’s partner Mary Quinn the trio hit upon the idea of doing the Three Peaks Challenge – climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon – in 24 hours.
“We set out with a target of £1,500 but with the number of pledges we’ve had coming in we’re now looking at £2,000,” said Lucy, aged 28.
Training for the challenge has involved extensive walks around Redditch to build stamina as well as hikes in the Malverns and the Cotswolds.
“We’re doing it to raise money for RoadPeace, a charity supports bereaved families through all kinds of road accidents, hit and runs, drunk drivers, they support people right across the board, including those seriously injured, and they campaign for tougher sentencing too,” said Lucy.
