Town two elected to General Synod

Redditch Editorial 25th Oct, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

THE TOWN of Redditch is now home to two members of the Church of England General Synod.

Robin Lunn, county councillor for Redditch North, and Kashmir Garton took two of the three lay places on offer through elections to the Synod, which governs all matters referring to every aspect of the Church of England – including its worship.

Coun Lunn returns to the fold for a third five-year term but Kashmir is joining the ranks for the first time.

She said: “I am happy to have been elected to the General Synod and am looking forward to contributing to the development of the Church.”

The General Synod is the only body in England, apart from the House of Commons and Lords, which can pass legislation – such as the decision last year to approve female Bishops.

Both Coun Lunn and Kashmir will meet as members of the Synod three times a year, with two of the meetings taking place at Church House in London and the other in York.

Coun Lunn added: “I am delighted to be re-elected and look forward to pursuing the challenges of the next five years, not least the Reform and Renewal agenda to grow the Church and the hope of full union with the Methodists.”

The Synod will commence on November 24 with a ceremony in Westminster Abbey and will then be officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen.
