VANDALS have smashed the doors of an ancient Redditch chapel using a headstone they ripped from a nearby grave

The door of the chapel on Plymouth Road was struck with the cross-shaped gravestone at some time between 6pm on Wednesday (June 1) and 10am on Thursday (June 2)

Nothing was stolen in the attempted break in, although the stone cross was shattered and the chapel door slightly damaged.

A council spokesperson said : “The Church of England chapel dates back to 1855 and has a lot of historical significance. We recovered memorial masonry from surrounding graves and are now working with the police who have upped their patrols in the area following this act of mindless vandalism.”
