Veterans give cash boost to next generation

VETERANS have handed over thousands of pounds to the next generation of armed servicemen and women thanks to the support of Lloyds Bank.

Members of the Redditch branch of the Parachute Regimental Association donated £1,000 each to the town’s army and sea cadets as well as the air flying corps at a special ceremony at the headquarters of the 37th Signal Regiment in Moons Moat on Monday (July 28).

The cash was raised by workers from Lloyds Bank who originally set out to raise £10,000 to help the PRA send veterans, their carers and families to Holland in September to mark the 70th anniversary of the battle of Arnhem during the Second World War.

But after smashing the target and collecting over £17,000, it was agreed some of it could be donated to good causes in the borough.

The bank also matched the veterans’ donation by adding another £1,000 to the cash handed over. Another £500 was given to the Remembering Redditch’s Fallen Heroes project to help restore the names of some of those missing from the town’s war memorials.

Ahead of the cheque presentations veterans, including some of those who fought in the Second World War, were given an opportunity to inspect the cadets on parade.

Col Andrew Taylor, commandant of the Hereford and Worcester Army Cadet Force, said: “We see here the two extremes of the armed forces – the younger generation in the cadet force and the older generation in the old comrades.

“I know the youngsters can learn learn from your experience and service and the example you have set and we thank you for what you’ve done.

He added: “We’re approaching the centenary of the First World War and people are starting to remember what happened 100 years ago when local heroes, local men, marched off to war some younger than the cadets on parade tonight. They all did their duty and it’s right they should be remembered.”
