Volvo garage in Redditch to become retirement apartments

PLANS to bulldoze Redditch’s Volvo garage and build retirement living apartments have been submitted to Redditch Borough Council.

McCarthy and Stone intend to develop 45 new homes for retired people on the site on Clive Road after they consulted with nearly 2,000 residents and stakeholders of which they said 96 per cent supported the plans.

The development will 26 staff at the Johnson’s dealership move to their Solihull site but the company have assured it will not affect their other operations in the town.

Darren Humphries, regional managing director at McCarthy and Stone, said: “We have striven to design a high-quality development which is in-keeping with the distinctive local character in terms of the use of materials, scale and massing whilst introducing housing to meet the needs of people in later life.

“There is clearly a local need for this form of accommodation in Redditch. This was reflected in the number of people who expressed support for our plans at a public exhibition in March 2016.

“Our proposals would increase the local housing choice for elderly residents in Redditch, whilst also releasing family-sized houses back into the local market as residents moving into retirement living apartments would be typically looking to downsize.”
