AN animal lover who lives in a Sanctuary Care home in Redditch got a very special 100th birthday treat when she was visited by a police puppy.

Ivy Pickering celebrated her centenary on Monday at Brambles Residential Care Home in Birchfield Road, Headless Cross, where the team organised for her to have a special surprise visit from Xena, a five-month-old German Shepherd, with Sergeants Spencer Bradley and Simon Garrett of the West Mercia Police Dog Training Unit.

Born in Aston, Birmingham, Ivy was the eldest of five children and Birmingham for most of her life and moved to Redditch in 2011 to be closer to her extended family around Worcestershire.

“It was a wonderful surprise to see the German Shepherd dogs,” said Ivy. “I had a lovely day with lots of visitors.”

Speaking about her secret to reaching such a great age, she said: “I always enjoyed walking holidays, fresh air and good health.”
