Warning as council tax con artists target vulnerable with 'refund' offer

FRAUDSTERS are trying to get residents to part with large sums of money after claiming they are due a council tax refund.

In one case the con artists claimed to be from Stratford district council’s council tax department when they contacted one elderly resident.

The female caller told the resident that she was entitled to a refund of thousands of pounds resulting from a change in council tax banding.

The caller then asked the resident for her bank account details up front so that she could refund the money.

She also asked for a £65 up front payment to cover administration costs.

When the resident refused to make a payment or give her bank account details and asked the caller for a number she could call back on to verify the information, the caller slammed the phone down.

Police are urging people to note that Stratford district council would never approach any resident in this way and would never ask for a payment to cover administration when refunding an overpayment.
