“People are still being stupid and leaving their dogs in cars in hot weather,” says Pip Singleton, dog warden for Worcestershire.

With the weather set to turn cloudier over the weekend but the mercury still high, Pip warns the lack of sunshine doesn’t necessarily make the situation any safer.

“On average when the weather is like this we receive one or two calls in Redditch town and the surrounding car parks but that is still one or two too many,” she said.

“And that is not including the calls to the police, RSPCA and those that the public deal with themselves.

“It’s like putting your dog in an oven and turning the temperature up, ” Pip added.

“The suffering is horrendous for them yet despite all the messages being put out social media, we are still getting calls about it.”

Each year the RSPCA and the police receive thousands of calls concerning dogs trapped inside cars on a warm day and just over last weekend alone (June 27 and 28) the RSPCA received almost 100 related calls.

Following these statistics, a coalition of animal charities are uniting to warn people of the devastating consequences of leaving dogs in hot cars.

The group have launched a hard hitting campaign recreating a harrowing real life incident where a couple returned to their car from a shopping trip, to find their dog had died from the heat.

Organisations inluding the RSPCA, The British Veterinary Association (BVA), National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC), Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Blue Cross, The Mayhew Animal Home, PDSA, Wood Green The Animals Charity and the National Animal Welfare Trust are all on board.

Anyone who sees an animal in distress or has been left in a hot car should dial 999 as the police have the power to break into vehicles.
