A WOMAN who has helped raise more than £3million to support cancer patients and their families is hoping to repeat her success in her new role with a borough charity.
Wendy Stokes has joined Carers’ Careline, based in the Ecumencial Centre in Redditch Town Centre, as a fund-raiser having left the same role at The Primrose Hospice after eight years.
“Whether I have been at Ladies Day in the sunshine, or in the pouring rain and freezing cold I have enjoyed every single moment of it.” Wendy said of her time with the charity.
“It has been both a great privilege and a pleasure to have been part of the Primrose fund-raising team and to have met and worked with so many lovely people along the way.”
Her new aim will be to boost support for her new charity which offers advice, support, social groups, activities and counselling to the borough’s 8,889 carers. It also seeks out and helps the hundreds of other ‘hidden carers’ across Redditch who look after a loved one or family member but consider it just part of their duty rather than caring.
The charity has just been awarded a grant of £4,000 from Redditch Borough Council to continue with its telephone support service.
Natalie Carney, carer services manager, said: “As with any other charitable organisation, the continuation of Carers Careline depends on funding which in today’s financial climate is not easy to obtain. Carers Careline are extremely grateful for this funding as the telephone support service is often the lifeline needed for unpaid hidden carers looking after a friend or family member in Redditch.”
They are also running diabetes training sessions as part of a Big Lottery Fund grant scheme. A session takes place on Wednesday, June 4 between 11am and 12pm and 1pm and 2pm and covers the complications of diabetes, insulin administration and the effects of the condition. They are open to registered carers and the public.
