COMPETITORS from across the continent will be trying to prove they are a cut above when the European Chainsaw Carving Championships takes place in Alcester.

Featuring 75 chainsaws and an incredible 38 tonnes of timber, the competition will see 25 of Europe’s top carvers create supreme sculptures across three action-packed days at Ragley Estate from Thursday (September 15) to next Saturday (September 17).

The event, held twice a year, sees people compete from eight countries, such as Norway, Lithuania and the Czech Republic.

Carvers start with a huge 1.5 tonne redwood log measuring 6ft in height by 3ft in diameter – they have the three days to produce an amazing sculpture.

Competition is expected to be very stiff, with numerous previous champions taking their place, including two-time European and defending champion Will Lee.

The judging will commence at 1pm on the Saturday and will be led by the Marquess Of Hereford.

The public will get the chance to buy these truly exceptional pieces of art at an auction that follows the announcement of the winner at 2pm.

Running alongside the main event will be two exciting speed carves where six competitors go head to head to produce a carving in just half-an-hour, in what is sure to be an exciting spectacle of flying wood chips.
