A YEAR ten student from St Augustine’s has rowed her way to a place at the National Schools Championships.

Megan Mellors, 15, will compete along with her partner Lucy Hart at the 1000 metre J15 Women’s Double Schools Event in Nottingham on May 22 to 24.

She said: “At the moment I’m quite excited about it but closer to the time I’m sure I’ll be nervous.”

Megan, who has been rowing for a year and one month on Wednesday (April 29), has been working with her partner for around 11 months.

The two were paired after Megan joined Stourport Rowing Club three months after Lucy.

Megan added: “We get on really well, as soon as we met we clicked and everyone says we get on like a house on fire.”

Currently Megan is training six times a week, rowing on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

She is also up at 6.30am on a Saturday and joins her dad on a two hour bike ride, as extra training, on a Sunday morning when she cycles to Stourport from Redditch for training.

She added: “I don’t know how I do it all.

“I fit in homework when I can and sometimes I do have some late nights and I have turn down sleepovers with my friends but hopefully it’ll all be worth it.”

Megan’s father has recently brought her a set of blades, the part of the oar which goes into the water, which she can take with her to university, if she choses one which offers rowing.

She might consider Oxford or Cambridge and, if so achieve her dream of competing in the famous university Boat Race.

She added: “I am definitely never going to stop rowing.

“It’s such a good sport. You can have children from the age of 12 and keep going until you’re 80.

“I’ll keep going for as long as I can.”

Megan will also be competing at the National Championships, a distance of over 2000 metres, which will be held in Strathclyde (TBC) on July 18 and 19.
