A sporting summer to savour across two counties and beyond

THE HEREFORDSHIRE & WORCESTERSHIRE Sports Awards are a celebration of the fine calibre of sporting talent within the two counties, which will be demonstrated by a summer full of elite sport in the area and beyond.

Both counties will see elite sport taking place on their own doorstep, with the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships taking place at the University of Worcester Arena and the European Blind Football Championships being played at thePoint4 in Herefordshire, whilst our sporting stars from the region are competing elsewhere across the world in their respective sports.

There has already been success so far for swimmers Claire Cashmore and Sascha Kindred OBE at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow earlier this month.

Herefordshire’s Kindred, who was crowned H&W Sports Personality of the Year in 2014, returned to the pool to claim a gold and bronze medal 21 years after making his debut.

Redditch-born Cashmore, named Disabled Sportsperson of the Year at the awards in 2012 and 2013, medalled in similar style as she brought home a silver and a bronze.

Sports Personality of the Year 2012 winner, the multi-talented sportswoman Josie Pearson MBE, has been named on the GB Paralympic Programme for British Cycling and announced she will focus on hand-cycling ahead of Rio next year.

Having made the shortlist for the 2014 Sports Personality of the Year Award, Worcestershire County Cricket Club’s Moeen Ali has been making his presence felt in the English cricket team this summer with a phenomenal perfomance in the opening fixture of the Ashes.

There is hope for further success this summer via other former Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards winners, with Tracy Moseley currently leading the field halfway through the Enduro Mountain Biking World Series, whilst Morgan Baynham-Williams heads off with GB Rowing to compete in the World U23 Championships and Edward Higson competes as part of the Royal Yachting Association Laser Radial UK Youth Squad.
