ALCESTER’S crown green bowling week started with a visit to Hockley Heath in Northfield League Division Three and the result went with ground advantage as Alcester lost by 29 shots.

They did pick up three points, however, with wins from Dave Hovell (excellent at 21-5), Ken Harvey (21-14) and Renny Bannister (21-19).

For the sixth week in succession, both Alcester teams in Division Seven of the S&W Birmingham Over 60s League were victorious.

The A team visited Co-Op C and all six Alcester players were successful. Superb wins for Margaret D’Elia (21-5), Ken Harvey (21-8) and Jean Bannister (21-9) were backed up by John Slater (21-11), David Whittington (21-17) and Renny Bannister (21-18) to give the visitors a 58-shot victory.

The 12 league points thus accrued maintains their top spot in the division.

The B team had a home match against Hockley Heath B and ran out winners by 22 shots. Winning cards from Christine Anderson (unstoppable at 21-4), Trish Barry (21-12), Jean Craddock (21-15) and Red Masterson (21-17) gave Alcester eight points to reinforce their comfortable mid-table position.

Conversely, both Alcester sides in the Yardley Wood League slumped to defeat for the second week in a row.

At home to Baldwin A, the A team went down by 20 shots, but did pick up three points with winning cards from Dave Hovell (21-16), Renny Bannister (21-19) and Carole Slater (21-20).

Alcester are now five points from safety in last but one place in Division One and relegation looks almost inevitable.

In Division Three the B team also picked up three points with winning cards from David Hodgson (superb at 21-6), Gill Evans and Val McDermott (both 21-19).

Although they suffered a 38-shot defeat, they are looking reasonably safe in mid-table.

Division Two of the Heart of England League saw Alcester A pick up a valuable win at King George V by 25 shots.

Each side had four winners, with Alcester getting excellent cards from Margaret D’Elia (21-7) and John Alderson (21-8). Dave Hovell (21-12) and Jean Bannister (21-15) completed the 14 points tally for the visitors.

Some measure of revenge for the previous week’s heavy defeat came the way of the B team in Division Four when they hosted Solihull Marsh Lane A.

With two excellent winning cards from David Sutor (21-5) and Rick Horton (21-8), backed up by further winners in David Whittington (21-11), Trish Barry (21-13) and Val McDermott (21-17), Alcester picked up 15 points for this 26-shot success.

Whilst having no hope of promotion, they nevertheless maintain third place in the division.
