Alcester reflect on a largely enjoyable campaign

ALCESTER Bowling Club have concluded what has been a largely successful season.

Four teams achieved promotion, all as champions of their respective leagues, whilst one team were relegated.

In Division Three of the Northfield League, Alcester had an unusual result when they entertained current leaders Black Horse A.

Although they won the match by six shots, Alcester gained only four points against the visitors’ six as a consequence of having just two winning cards as opposed to the six for Black Horse.

Alcester’s two winners were Ken Harvey with a superb 21-2 card and Jean Sherrington (21-14). The result leaves Alcester in the second relegation position.

The final matches in the Heart of England Over 60s competition brought very mixed fortunes for the two Alcester teams.

The A team travelled to Kings Norton A, where they suffered their biggest defeat of a dreadful season, going down by 75 shots without a winning card.

This 16-0 thrashing confirms their relegation to Division Two for next season, although they managed to avoid finishing bottom of the table.

In Division Five the already promoted B team hosted second placed Moorpool B, who they needed to beat in order to secure top position in the division.

The Moorpool cause was not helped by being a player short, giving Alcester’s Gill Spiers a 21-0 card without her bowling a wood.

Husband Geoff was almost as successful with a 21-2 win and David Hodgson (21-10), John Willis (21-13), Margaret D’Elia (21-17) and Trish Barry (21-18) completed the 66-shot rout.

Alcester therefore gained 16 points to the visitors’ nil, making the home side the club’s fourth promoted team this season.

The final match of the season saw Alcester visit Austin British Legion B in Division Three of the Northfield League.

This proved to be a tense battle against relegation, which Alcester lost by a single shot.

They had winning cards from Jean Sherrington with a superb 21-9, John Alderson also strong at 21-11 and Brian Lees and Jean Bannister (both 21-17) and, although they lost 6-4, this was sufficient to stave off relegation.
