MUCH-LOVED Kings Norton Golf Club stalwart Bernard Preston sadly passed away in the early hours of Sunday, just four days short of his 100th birthday.

Bernard was an assistant to Ernest Cawsey at Kings Norton Golf Club from 1933 to 1939, joining the Worcestershire Professional Golfers’ Association in 1938.

Bernard came from a military family and when he saw war it was inevitable he volunteered for active service, fighting for his country.

On his return he became head professional at Kings Norton from 1945 to 1959, when he left to take up the position of head professional at Rose Hill, The Lickey Hills municipal golf course, where he remained until his retirement in the late 1970s.

Bernard was captain and president of the Worcestershire PGA during his years as a member and also captain of the Midland PGA and was awarded honorary membership of the association and Kings Norton Golf Club on his retirement.

Everyone connected with Kings Norton Golf Club sends their sincere condolences to Bernard’s family and friends. He will be sorely missed.
