Forgettable weekend for Redditch hockey sides

REDDITCH were unable to halt their poor run of form on Saturday as Ludlow earned a 7-2 victory at Bromsgrove Road in the West Midlands Premier Division.

The hosts started brightly and created the better chances, but their finishing let them down on a few occasions and goals by Steve Cook and Richard Sellors were bettered as the visitors led 3-2 at half time.

The second half saw Redditch over-commit in their search for an equaliser and they were caught on the break by two quickfire goals which put the game to bed.

Heads dropped and Ludlow struck twice more and the task gets no easier for the Kingfishers on Saturday when they visit leaders Finchfield.

IT WAS also a day to forget for both the 2nds and 3rds, who suffered 10-1 and 8-1 defeats at Old Wulfrunians teams in West Midlands Division Two and One respectively.

The 2nds were always up against it as they travelled to Wolverhampton with only ten players and their only reward was a first half goal from Alan Povey whose sweetly struck short corner strike nestled in the bottom right corner.

It was a similar story for the 3rds who, despite battling hard and creating numerous chances, could not cope with their hosts’ attacks.

The visitors’ goal arrived from a short corner which Will Moss passed out to Tim, who controlled the ball and beat one player before firing a superb shot into the bottom left corner, where Harry Williams got the faintest of touches deflect the effort home.

LUCK was not on Redditch Ladies’ side as, despite a largely dominant performance, they somehow contrived to lose 3-0 at home to Pershore in Worcestershire League Division One.

The hosts spurned numerous chances and were punished by the visitors who put a further dent in Redditch’s promotion aspirations.

THE MIXED Redditch team turned in a highly creditable display at home to Edgbaston on Sunday in the second round of the England Hockey Mixed Cup.

Redditch started with only nine players on a wet and cold day and the numerical disadvantage showed at times as Edgbaston were given time on the ball to pick passes.

The advantage in numbers soon reared its head as Edgbaston scored from close range, but this only spurned Redditch into life and the two players Redditch were missing soon entered the game to even the numbers up and It showed as Anna Stafford scored from a well worked short corner to level.

Almost immediately Redditch scored again as Steve Cook rounded the keeper and scored from a tight angle to give them the advantage going into half time.

In the second half Edgbaston began to show their experience and skill and quickly scored from two short corners to edge ahead.

Redditch continued to push for the equaliser but to no avail as the visitors again scored from a short corner.

With time ticking away, Redditch continued to push to try and salvage something from the game, but could not break down the Edgbaston defence.

Even in defeat, Redditch showed they could push opposition from higher leagues all the way and all involved should be proud of the amount of effort put in and how they played as a team.
