REDDITCH Swimming Club star Issy Griffiths has been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Junior Championships in July following her impressive recent performances at the British Championships at Tollcross in Glasgow.

This year’s British Championships north of the border doubled up as the GB Olympic trials and 16-year-old Griffiths won a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle in the ‘Target Tokyo’ final (16 to 19 years age group) for the country’s best young talent, who are aiming to become Olympians themselves in four years’ time.

Griffiths also finished fifth in the 200m freestyle Junior final (14 to 17 years) in a new personal best time of 2:03.64 and also swam in the 200m butterfly, 400m individual medley and 800m freestyle events.

This year’s European Junior Championships will take place in Hódmezövásárhely, Hungary, between July 6-10.

Redditch Swimming Club head coach Chris Britt said: “This is a fantastic honour for Issy and a well deserved reward for her great dedication and the huge amount of hard work she has put in over the past eight years or so. We wish her every success in Hungary.”

Griffiths now trains with the City of Birmingham squad, coached by Carl Grosvenor, but she still regularly competes for her ‘home club’ Redditch SC, where she began her swimming career at the age of seven.

Last summer Griffiths won a hat-trick of medals including gold in the 800m freestyle at the prestigious British Summer Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.
