It's hot stuff at the top

THERE were no close games in the latest round of the Swan Studley Skittles League, but there were lots of stacks as table-toppers Alcester Nomads – in their last game of the season – led the way with a league record team score thanks to Alan Spreckley 46 (15-stack), Mac Eaton 46 (14 and 12-stacks) and Alan Cummings 44 (14-stack).

Opponents Chris & Gerry Show joined in the scoring feast by recording their season’s highest team total as Richard Fisher finished with 45 (14-stack), Angela Guest 39 (13-stack) and John Hall 34.

Maudslay remained in touch for the title by beating Lodge Farmers and now need to take maximum points from their last two games to pip Nomads.

Maudslay’s Mark Sanseverino made 39, Carlo Sanseverino 38 (10-stack) and Paul Matthews 37. Best for Lodge Farmers in their sixth straight loss were Tim Jones 40 (13-stack), Glyn Morley 37 and Steve Smith 36.

With third place secured and only an outside chance of second spot, Engineers might have been excused for taking it easy against Well Developed but, with the pressure off, Engineers cruised to their win with another big total.

Dave Green had a 13-stack in a total of 40 and wasn’t he pleased as this was the first time in 30 years of skittling he has got into the 40s. Team-mates Mark Ganderton made 42 (13-stack) and Ian Greenway 41 (15-stack).

Well Developed had Martin Brennan making 38 (12-stack), Dave Bevan 33 and Ron Skidmore 32.

Team BG, now with five wins on the trot, comfortably saw off Jumbo Jet Set. There were stacks of 13 each for Gail Stringer (42 pins) and Ray Cartwright (37) and 37 also from Chad Baker for the winners, while best for disappointing Jumbos came from Dan Hill 36 (12-stack) and Mick Stanton 34.

Mixtures took full advantage against eight-man Alley Cats and recorded their first successive wins of the season. Yet another stack of 11 pins was made by Tom Fletcher in a score of 36 whilst other Mixtures players John Green and John Day made 35 each.

For Alley Cats, Tony O’Connor scored well with 37 (14-stack), Anne O’Connor 36 and Sam Billyard 34.

Swan consigned opponents Swingers to the wooden spoon in this comfortable win to join in the scrap for mid-table respectability.

Swingers, now 12 games without a win, had Larry Hanks making 42 (14-stack) and Paul Clifton 37, with the best for Swan coming from Mel Bayliss 38 (13-stack), Dave Maule 35 and Charlie Withers 34.

Results: Chris & Gerry Show 2 points (318 pins) Alcester Nomads 9 (360); Maudslay 9 (338) Lodge Farmers 2 (313); Engineers 9 (348) Well Developed 2 (303); Team BG 9 (328) Jumbo Jet Set 2 (311); Mixtures 9 (322 – ten players and 278 – eight players) Alley Cats 2 (242 – eight players); Swingers 2 (283) Swan 9 (319).
