Kingfishers are seeking to bounce back

Redditch Editorial 7th May, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

SKIPPER Luke Davis is looking for a big response from his Redditch Entaco players after a narrow two-wicket defeat to current Worcestershire League Division One leaders Droitwich on Saturday.

Having been dismissed for 155, the Kingfishers hit back as Waqas Ali claimed five wickets, but visitors Droitwich held on to win.

Davis, however, will expect a positive reaction on Saturday when Entaco travel to Bromyard, who are struggling so far this season.

After losing the toss and being put into bat by Droitwich, Redditch struggled from ball one. Seam bowler Max Young was the destroyer in chief with 5-55 as Redditch were all out for 155 off 48.3 overs.

Only Russell Southwick (33) and teenager Ghulam Moyhuddin (31no) made any contributions with the bat.

Droitwich did not have it all their own way when they replied as the impressive Ali (5-38) and Australian Joe Scarcella (3-48) picked up regular wickets, but opener Jake Young with 52, aided by Max Young (38), saw Droitwich home with two wickets to spare.

Redditch 2nds also suffered defeat as hosts Stourport took the points in a thrilling Division One 2nd XI match.

At one stage Redditch were 80-4, but they rallied thanks to a century partnership between Yassar Altaf (92) and Abdul Jabbar (51) to finish on 243-9.

Teenager Sam Egan gave Redditch hope with 4-49, but an excellent 87 from Ian Delo allowed Stourport to sneak home with just one ball to spare.

Netherton are the visitors to Bromsgrove Road on Saturday.

The 3rds opened their Division Five campaign with a four-wicket defeat at West Malvern.

Batting first, Redditch Entaco posted 220-6 off 50 overs. Opener Marlon Lokenath top scored with 79 and valuable contributions from skipper Matthew Mansfield (38) and Olly Mason (26) gave Redditch a total to defend.

The more experienced Malvern batting proved crucial as they reached their target in the 49th over, although Lokenath completed his excellent day by taking 3-63.

On Saturday Stourbridge are the visitors to Entaco, whilst the 4ths travel to Stourbridge.

In the opening week of the Sunday League season, Redditch versus Barnt Green was abandoned without a ball bowled due to overnight rain. Bromsgrove are the visitors this weekend in a 2nd XI fixture.
