Kings Norton 28 Yardley & District 11

North Midlands Vase second round

KINGS began their 2014/15 campaign with a workmanlike victory over their spiky visitors from north Birmingham on Saturday.

After initial skirmishes, the game sparked into life with a powerful Will Greenwood attack, before Chris Hands took over and from his break Chris Mynot scored a try for the hosts, which Shane Rees converted.

Y&D got themselves into the game with a penalty but, after sustained pressure, Kings scored a second try with a pick and drive by Ben Boyce before Rees added the extras.

Yardley scored another penalty which was matched by an effort from Rees before Mynot’s run created space for Rob McGhee, who took the ball to the line and the supporting Phil Stock scored, before the reliable Rees added the extras.

Rees kicked a penalty to move the half time score to 25-6 in Kings’ favour.

Kings controlled the second half without making headway against their visitors’ robust efforts and in the 65th minute it was Yardley who broke through to score a try before Kings stepped it up and scored a penalty as the game fizzled out.

Kings will travel to face Dudley Wasps in the quarter-finals.

Kings Norton open their Midlands Four West (South) league campaign at home on Saturday against neighbours Five Ways Old Edwardians.

As a one off, their RHINOS junior section have altered their training morning to coincide with this game and support the seniors.
