Knockout Cup action begins

TWENTY-SIX teams of three players contested the first round of the Swan Studley Skittles Triples Knockout Cup to decide which eight teams would compete in next week’s final rounds.

Jumbo Jet Set A and Lodge Farmers C in group one played at the Swan, Studley, and progressed with scores of 108 and 107 pins respectively, whilst Engineers D would regret being eliminated after failing to capitalise on good stack chances.

Mixtures’ only triples team started surprisingly badly as their first two skittlers scored first leg zeroes and they never recovered from this setback.

Best scores on the night came from Mick Stanton (Jumbos A) and Brandon Kelso (Engineers A) with 39 pins each, Neil Harrison (Alley Cats A 38), Len Quartly (Jumbos A 37), 36 each from Alex Cull and Glyn Morley (both Lodge Farmers C) and Malcolm Batchelor (Alley Cats A).

The only all-ladies team in the quarter-final draw is Well Developed A with a total of 100 pins as they finished second to Swan A in group two, played at South Redditch Social Club.

Well Developed’s top scorer was Margueritte Bayley with 41 pins (11-stack). Swan A were comfortably first in the group, making 106 pins as all their skittlers produced consistent scores, with Dave Maule top scoring with 37.

Alcester Nomads A missed out on qualifying by a single pin despite Alan Cummings scoring an excellent 40. Other notable scorers on the night were Dick Walters (Maudslay A 37) and Gail Stringer (Team BG A) and Joe Withers (Swan A), both making 35.

Group three, played on HDA (alley 1), saw Engineers C ease to into the quarter-finals in making 105 pins including a 40-pin return from Luke Saunders.

Well Developed B, after an indifferent first leg score, improved well over the next four legs and are equally comfortably through with a total of 97 pins after Jim Child top scored with 35 pins.

Chris & Gerry Show A had two players (John and Angela Guest) making good totals of 37 pins each but it was not enough as their third skittler had ‘one of those difficult and forgettable nights’.

It needed a sudden death play-off by a skittler from each team to decide if Swingers only team or Engineers B would be in the last eight after both teams ended with 94 pins each.

Pete Clewlow, for Engineers, went first and, after completing his bowling, remarked frustratedly “what just happened?” as he left Swingers’ Paul Clifton needing only two pins to win, which were easily made in a score of nine.

Top team in group four at HDA (alley 2) was Maudslay B who made 101 pins including 39 from Tim Greenaway. Pete Clewlow made 35 pins in the team game, a score matched by Swingers’ Christine Stokes (11-stack).

There were 34 pins each from Sally Racki (Swan B), Paul Clifton (Swingers) and Rob Baker (Team BG B).
