Leaders Nomads continue to set a blistering pace

ALCESTER Nomads’ blistering start to the Swan Studley Skittles League season continued with another big win as they saw off winless Jumbo Jet Set.

Jumbos should perhaps have taken the first leg, rather than tie it, which may have changed the outcome of the game, but there was then no denying the league leaders who opened up a 24-pin lead after leg three and extended it through the final two legs.

In-form Mac Eaton, for Nomads, made 37 (10-stack) and was well supported by Annette and Eddie Upright with 36 each. Jumbos’ Steve Wardle and Len Quartly scored 35 each and Dave Young 33.

Although not at their best, Engineers, bowling first, were too good for strugglers Swan in a close game as both teams registered their lowest scores of the season.

The win meant Engineers remained hot on the heels of the league leaders and were grateful for John Bool’s 37 (10-stack) and 34 each from Brandon Kelso and Mark Ganderton.

Swan were left more than 70 to win but fell well short. Swan’s Carl Moorman made 37 (14-stack), Helen Racki 35 (11-stack) and Andy Reynolds and Dave Maule 34 apiece, but other team-mates could not produce better scores which might have overturned the result.

Maudslay stay third after a comfortable win against Alley Cats. Maudslay were 14 pins ahead after the first leg and maintained a good lead throughout the game.

Keith Fryer scored 39, Geoff Mayneord 35 and Dean Watson 34 for the winners.

Alley Cats needed 80 in the last leg, but never came close, although for compensation their final total was their season’s best, as was Pete Sollis’ individual score of 40 (13-stack). Also for the Cats, Anne O’Connor and Tony O’Connor made 39 and 35 respectively.

Fourth placed Team BG made their season’s lowest total but it was still too good for Well Developed who made their best score so far.

The game was the closest of the week but, when Team BG opened up a 14-pin lead after leg three, the game looked settled, only for their opponents to fight back and take the last two legs to gain valuable points.

WD’s skipper David Searle made 41 – his team’s best individual score of the season – Martin Brennan 35 and Liz Hindson and Jim Child 32 each. For the winners, there were scores of 37 from Carl Baker, 35 for Maggie Reynolds and 34 for Rob Baker.

Chris & Gerry Show were well ahead after three legs before Swingers cut the deficit to take consolation points from the last two legs.

C&G Show’s Dave Williams scored an excellent 39 and team-mate Arthur Sears chipped in with 36.

Swingers had Paul Clifton scoring 35 and Brenda Morris, Brenda Leake and Margaret Hendy 32 each.

Results: Alcester Nomads 9.5 points (336 pins) Jumbo Jet Set 1.5 (308); Engineers 8 (312) Swan 3 (304); Maudslay 8 (324) Alley Cats 3 (312); Team BG 7 (302) Well Developed 4 (298); Swingers 3.5 (276) Chris & Gerry Show 7.5 (288).
