National glory for county bridge team

THE WORCESTERSHIRE bridge team performed superbly to win the Inter-County Teams Championship run by the English Bridge Union.

The county team had earned their place in the national stages of the competition by virtue of their Dawes League victory of earlier in the year in which they saw off competition from counties including Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Gloucestershire.

As a result, the team competed in the national final and played against other winners of regional leagues, which included strong teams from Surrey and Manchester.

After an exciting and hard fought game, Worcestershire emerged victorious with a score of 57 – which was 11 clear of second placed Manchester.

Bridge is often thought to be a card game played by old men in smoke-filled rooms but in fact the reality is quite different as a wide variety of people – young and old – play in all sorts of environments, with men and women being roughly equally represented.

The game is thriving in Worcestershire and the county team has done well in national events.

County chairman Mike Willoughby said: “The social and mental health benefits of playing bridge have drawn more and more people into playing and enjoying the game at every level, from social games with friends to national competitions.

“Those who have chosen to play competitively in Worcestershire enjoy doing so and have improved greatly as a result and this win endorses our success.

“We’ve had a lot of fun in the last couple of years and our players are making their mark in national events. We’re looking forward to more successes and to more and more people enjoying the game.

“I’d caution people to beware, though. While we can recommend some excellent teachers for those who would like to learn the game, it’s easy to get bitten by the bridge bug!”
