New School Sport category for Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards

ON THE back of two fantastic Summer School Games events at the beginning of July, Sports Partnership Herefordshire & Worcestershire have launched a new accolade as part of their Sports Awards.

The Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards aim to recognise and reward sporting achievement, contribution and effort across the two counties and schools across the region can now be recognised for their efforts with the new ‘Sports School of the Year Award’.

Contributions can take many different forms, although ultimately with the aim of raising the profile of sport and physical activity.

Schools can be recognised for the development of new facilities with the aim of increasing sporting provision and increasing participation, for community engagement and charity projects, committing to achieving high standards such as work towards the School Games Mark, or development of new partnerships with schools, community groups, charities or facility providers.

Paralympic Swimmer Kate Grey, who was guest of honour at both the Worcestershire and Herefordshire School Games, emphasised: “Sport isn’t always about winning. I certainly didn’t win every race!

“Sometimes you will be successful and sometimes you won’t. It’s about being involved and having a great time and it’s important to leave having achieved something knowing that you have been the best that you can be.”

Sports Partnership Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chief Executive, Stephen Brewster, said: “The inclusion of the new school award is really to highlight and recognise schools who are going the extra mile to increase participation in sport amongst all of their pupils, regardless of abilities.

“We hope the addition of the award will also encourage schools to focus on the importance of physical activity amongst young people and look to develop initiatives that will allow them to be nominated for this award.”

Schools can self nominate or, if you know a school that you think is deserving of this award, you can nominate them by visiting www.sportspartnershiphw.co.uk/sportsawards.

Bullivant Media – publisher of Observer and Standard newspaper titles across Worcestershire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands – is sponsoring the headline Sports Personality of the Year award for the third year in succession.

There is the opportunity for businesses and organisations to sponsor awards, either as individual award category sponsors or other sponsorship packages. For more details visit the website above or e-mail Sarah Mackay at [email protected].

The 2016 Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards take place at Worcester Warriors’ Sixways Stadium on Wednesday, November 9.
