Poynton clinches victory in Federation match at Arrow Valley

POPULAR Redditch angler Scott Poynton was victorious in the Redditch Federation fishing match at Arrow Valley Lake on Saturday.

Although fish were scarce in some areas and were generally out of pole range for most, the lake showed a welcome return to something like its form of a couple of years ago for this carp-barred, float-only event.

Following recent predation issues, it was very encouraging to see bream of several different year classes showing in catches for the 22 anglers taking part.

Match-winner Poynton (Old Ghost) was on peg 28 and fished the waggler at 35-40 yards with red maggots for an excellent all-bream bag of 66lb 12oz.

He fed small balls of goundbait laced with maggot and took fish of between one and 4lb in weight.

It was pole-fished maggots for runner-up Jon Newton (Smithy’s) on peg 43 with a cracking 41lb 5oz catch of skimmers, ahead of Paul Newell (Redditch) with another excellent catch on the waggler of 32lb from peg 8 and John Halfpenny (Hymatic AC) with 29lb 2oz on the same method from peg 41.

Section awards went to Kieran Woodfield (Browning) with 16lb 9oz, Bryan Jarvis (Birmingham) with 13lb 14oz and Rob Street (Smithy’s) with 6lb.

John Bushell is running a match to the same rules on the lake on Saturday, June 13. Call him on 07879 624248 for more details.
