REDDITCH schoolboys Owen Allen (11) and Mason Passey (13) have both been crowned Birmingham & District boxing champions at the England Boxing Schools Championships in Digbeth.

The pair, who both box for Jewellery Quarter Boxing Club in the city, will now go forward to compete in the Midlands Regional Final on Sunday, May 8 in Warwickshire where they will attempt to secure a place in the national stages of the competition.

Allen is taking part in his first championships and remains unbeaten in his career and is delighted to have picked up his first boxing title at the first attempt.

Passey is a more experienced campaigner and gained his second Birmingham champions title having won the same event in 2015.

Passey lost out in the regional final last year in a very close contest and will be hoping to go one better this time around.

Jewellery Quarter BC coach Mick Maguire said: “Both lads are an absolute credit to the club and are a pleasure to work with. Owen and Mason are extremely dedicated to their sport and are now reaping the rewards from all the hard work they have both put in over the past 12 months.

“The training regime is not easy with three gym sessions a week and a Saturday morning track session at the Abbey Stadium, but there is never a hint of complaint from either of the boys.”
