THE POPULARITY of girls’ football has never been higher and Redditch is no exception, as proved by the fact half of the recently selected 20-strong Worcestershire Schools’ Football Association U14 Girls’ Representative squad are from the town.

A large number of girls trialled for the squad over two sessions and it is clear to see the Redditch youngsters have been inspired by the heroics of England Women at this year’s World Cup as they impressed the selectors to seal their places in the squad.

The Worcestershire girls played their first Midland Counties League fixture away to Shropshire and lost 4-2 as Ridgeway Middle School’s Grace Godwin netted for the visitors.

They then took part in the Anglo-Welsh Cup soon afterwards in which they beat West Glamorgan 5-1 and drew 1-1 with Cardiff & Vale.

The county girls also have the opportunity to travel to Sweden next year.
