Redditch Golf Club enjoys best ever golfing year

VETERAN club member Phil Guise has overseen Redditch Golf Club’s most successful competition campaign ever during his year as captain for 2014.

And, with the Lower Grinsty Lane club’s trophy cabinet bulging, he has given his successor – current vice-captain Nigel Clay – a hard act to follow.

“It has been a phenomenal year and we are very proud of the success we have enjoyed in so many different competitions.” said Guise.

Redditch Golf Club currently holds the three main county titles, having retained the Droitwich Shield it won last year and also seen members Russ Ager and Matt Vigurs win the Boulton Salver pairs competition and the club team holds the Brand Hall Gold Vase.

In the latter competition, Ben Myatt won a separate trophy for the best nett and gross score.

The winning streak does not end there as former club secretary Willie Kerr won the Worcestershire Seniors Best Nett Trophy at the age of 68 and the most recent individual winner is James Robinson, who won the Worcestershire County Junior Matchplay title.

The club’s feats have attracted high praise from Worcestershire County president Bill Thompson.

“The stand out team for the county in 2014 has been Redditch Golf Club. Their teams have won the Droitwich Shield, the Boulton Salver and the Brand Hall Gold Vase.” said Thompson.

“In addition, many of their players have either won or have featured very highly in all the County Strokeplay and Matchplay Championships this year. Well done to Redditch Golf Club!”

Redditch member Ager has been appointed as the county second team captain for the forthcoming season and, finally, the club’s scratch team has gained promotion to Midlands Division One of the Scratch League, something not achieved for many years, so will be playing against the cream of Midlands golf next year.

Guise said the club’s success was not solely confined to the golf course.

“We have seen our junior numbers rise from 17 to 46 under the guidance and mentoring of Steve Butler, Rob Woods and assistant professional Alex Richardson.” he said.

“The club is thriving with increases in many membership categories and increasing social and corporate use of the clubhouse which is all very encouraging.”

The captain’s charity for the year – Dogs for the Disabled – has also been an outstanding success. Originally targeting the training of one puppy Sandy, the club has now raised enough money to fund a further two puppies.

“We have so far raised over £15,000 and we have asked the charity that the three dogs all be placed with clients in Redditch when their training is completed.” added Guise.

“We see this as our way of completing the circle and emphasising the central role the club can play in the wider Redditch community life.”

Studley-based tax consultant Clay takes over from Guise on Monday.
