Redditch Golf Club prepares to stage prestigious qualifier

MORE than 100 of the country’s top professional and amateur golfers will battle it out at Redditch Golf Club on Monday, June 27.

The Lower Grinsty Lane club has secured another prestigious golf tournament and is hosting The Bridgestone Challenge Qualifying Event.

The event follows on from the club’s successful hosting of a pre-qualifying day for the Northern Ireland Open last May which gave the top two golfers on the day an entry into this European Challenge Tour event.

On June 27 the club will once again be in the limelight when some of the country’s up and coming professionals and amateurs battle it out for just two precious European Tour Challenge invitations for the Bridgestone Challenge round to be held at Heythrop Park Resort.

The event is sponsored by Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes and club marketing chairman Stuart Mee said the Lower Grinsty Lane course was ready for the tournament.

“Redditch Golf Club is in superb condition and due to the hard work put in by our groundstaff has been open virtually every day throughout the winter, despite some appalling gales and rainfall,” he said.

“Our head greenkeeper Karl Williams and his team are now gearing up to present the course in perfect condition on June 27 and everyone at the club is really excited about the news.”

Redditch Golf Club has steadily risen in the rankings as one of the Midlands’ and indeed the UK’s best golf courses, with praise for the condition of the course coming from all sides.

In January this year the club was named as one of the top clubs in the Midlands by the jury that counts the most – the region’s golfers.

The Callow Hill club ranked 13th out of 75 in the survey run by Midlands Golfer, beating many famous names such as The Belfry’s PGA course (46th), Edgbaston (44th) and exclusive private members club Blackwell (64th).

Mee added: “In early 2015 we committed to a £200,000 investment in plant and machinery for our groundstaff and this has really paid dividends.

“Not only have we been able to keep the course open when most were shut, it has also see a dramatic improvement all round, and winning two such prestigious golf tournaments is the result.”
