Sammons strikes late to boost Reds' promotion hopes

Redditch Editorial 15th Feb, 2016 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

SUBSTITUTE Ash Sammons held his nerve to net an 86th minute penalty winner as Redditch United saw off visitors Chesham United 1-0 on Saturday to move up to third in the Southern League Premier Division table.

It was not always pretty but Liam McDonald’s Reds were rewarded for an improved second half performance when Sammons calmly side-footed home from 12 yards after George Carline had been upended in the box.

With leaders Poole Town seeing their fixture postponed and second placed Chippenham Town slipping to a 2-0 defeat at home to Kettering Town, the Reds can again entertain aspirations of pushing for the title in the final third of the campaign.

However, their first target is to cement their spot in the play-off positions and United have the chance to strengthen their claims for a top five finish when they travel to Devon tomorrow (Tuesday) to face basement boys Bideford.
