Top two cruise to victories

FOR the second week running Alcester Nomads, although not at their best, scored maximum points as they won every leg against Swan to stay top of the Swan Studley Skittles League.

Nomads’ first leg score of 55 pins looked inadequate, but Swan responded disastrously, making just 43. Swan never recovered from this setback and eventually produced their lowest team total of the season.

Nomads’ top scorers were Alan Spreckley with 39, Margaret Povey 38 and Geoff Loat 36, while Swan’s best came from Bob Haycock with 33 and 32 apiece from Andy Reynolds and Helen Racki.

Despite second placed Maudslay losing the first leg to Jumbo Jet Set, they quickly regained the initiative.

Jumbos used this game to produce their season’s worst performance and Maudslay, at their ruthless best, took advantage to record a very big pin win.

For the winners, Dick Walters (38) and Geoff Mayneord and Dave Ford with 37 each impressed, whilst only John Farley with 32 made a respectable score for Jumbos.

The closest game of the week saw a single-pin win for Chris & Gerry Show over Well Developed, as the latter narrowly failed to record a fifth straight victory.

C&G Show eased into a ten-pin lead after two legs but in-form Well Developed reduced that to four pins over the next two legs before setting their opponents 62 to take the game.

In the final leg C&G Show’s early scores were poor and it needed 17 pins from their last two bowlers Dave Charlesworth and Arthur Sears (match figures of 37 and 36 respectively) for the win, which Sears managed with the game’s last ball.

Other good scorers for C&G Show were Chris Smith (13-stack) and Dave Williams with 35 each. Well Developed’s Janina Brennan made 37 and Dave Bevan (11-stack) and Jim Child 36 each.

There was little joy for the bottom two teams, although Swingers’ Paul Clifton equalled his team’s season’s highest individual score of 47 (stacks of 13 and 12).

However, it did not inspire his team as Alley Cats pulled away over the last three legs to win comfortably. Clifton’s team-mates Judith Clews and Brenda Morris made 33 and 31 respectively and for Alley Cats Graham Batchelor scored 36, Tony O’Connor 34 and Loz Gazeley 33.

Meanwhile, Mixtures started promisingly and won the first leg before Team BG took control to also win comfortably.

June and Rob Baker scored 36 each and Lin Dyer and Janet Mold 34 each for Team BG, while Mixtures had best scores from Pam Clewlow (34) and Andy Reynolds and Helen Racki with 32 each.

Results: Swan 1 point (278 pins) Alcester Nomads 10 (315); Maudslay 9 (351) Jumbo Jet Set 2 (288); Well Developed 3 (311) Chris & Gerry Show 8 (312); Alley Cats 8 (310) Swingers 3 (295); Mixtures 2 (291) Team BG 9 (306).
