CHARLOTTE Gilmartin was delighted to claim an impressive sixth placed finish in the 500m at the season-ending International Skating Union World Short Track Speed Skating Championships.

The Redditch star was part of a Great Britain squad which left Seoul, South Korea, with three skaters in the top ten of the world rankings and Scottish ace and European champion Elise Christie ranked overall third in the world having won a silver medal in the 1,000m and bronze in the 1,500m.

Gilmartin, 26, has certainly taken her skating to a new level in recent months having won her first World Cup medal in Shanghai in December before winning overall silver in the European Championships in Russia in January.

On the third and final day of the World Championships, Gilmartin again used clever tactics and was able to avoid various bumps and knocks.

Her strong and well planned performance put her sixth in the 500m, which built on her fourth place in the 1,500m B event.

Having failed to qualify for the 1,000m event, Gilmartin was able to race in the ranking races for the 1,000m and she managed to finish in tenth place overall in the world rankings.

Gilmartin told the Standard: “It’s been my most successful season in every competition – World Cups, Europeans and World Championships – and that’s with the usual ups and downs of short track, so I’m really excited for what next season will bring.

“We’re less than two years away from the Olympics now, so it’s a great position to be in.”

Head Coach of GB Short Track, Nick Gooch, said: “I’m really proud of the way the athletes performed. Charlotte Gilmartin has made big progress throughout the season and Elise has had the best World Championships of her career to date.”

The team’s overall performance at this year’s World Championships means Great Britain will now qualify for three ladies’ positions for next year’s World Championships, which is a great feat for British short track speed skating.
