Young cyclists scoop medals at exciting venue

A NUMBER of Redditch Road & Path Cycling Club juniors impressed as they won medals at the Ludgate Finance cyclo-cross event at the Blists Hill Victorian village near Ironbridge.

It is the fourth year the race has been staged at this unique venue where the riders race around the streets of the village.

The first race of the night was for the U12, U10 and U8 categories and, with more than 80 riders signed up, it was always going to be chaotic.

The long climb at the bottom of the course proved to be a serious bottleneck but the Redditch club came away with some great results as Sullivan Berry finished third in the U12 boys’ event and Ellie Swingell won the U12 girls’ race.

Other notable Redditch results were Joe Homer tenth and Ryan Oldfield 12th in the U10s, whilst Joseph Turnbull and Josh Harffey also dealt with the difficult course well and showed great grit and determination.

The second race saw the youth riders take to the start line. They were riding the extended course, which included running the numerous steps up the inclined plane followed by the infamous slalom down the inclined railway.

Isla Mason won the U14 girls’ competition and also pushed the boys all the way, whilst Matthew Lowe had a great race to finish 13th.

The final two races of the evening were for the seniors and veteran male and female riders.

Although Redditch had a large number of riders in both of these races, nobody could match the results of their younger riders.

There was, however, a top ten result for Terry Richardson who finished an excellent seventh in the veterans 40-49 section.
