Redditch residents do not want library moved, according to consultation

Redditch Editorial 7th Jun, 2023 Updated: 7th Jun, 2023   0

REDDITCH residents do not want the library to be moved to the town hall, according to the recent survey consultation.

There were a total of 1467 responses to the survey, which represents 2.2 per cent of the Redditch population aged over 19.

Of the 1467 responses to the survey, 72.3 per cent said that they disagree with the relocation of the library.

Worcestershire County Council will be holding an Overview and Scrutiny Panel tomorrow (May 8) to discuss the results of the consultation.

The meeting will take at County Hall in Worcester at 10am, and will be live streamed.

London-based national charity The Library Campaign  (TLC) has said it is appalled at how the consultation has been conducted.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “It is pretty clear at Redditch Borough Council has long had a closed mind on the issue, and Worcestershire County Council has never questioned this.

“Nowhere is there any sign that the library location has ever been properly assessed in relation to the town plan.

“We’re shocked to find that WCC’s Overview & Scrutiny (OSC) panel is to make vital decisions on the unwanted

relocation of Redditch library at a meeting that has had no publicity, and has been organised in haste with no realistic possibility of receiving public representations.

“The results of WCC’s consultation on the matter have, similarly, been effectively concealed and made immune from timely public comment.”
