Alcester residents go quakers for duck race

RESIDENTS and visitors went quackers for this year’s annual Alcester Duck Race.

The event started from the footbridge at Centenary Fields with the winning duck crossing the finish line at the old bridge in Oversley.

The event helps to raise funds for Alcester Bunting and Lighting (ABLE) which decorates the town with flags in the summer and lights every Christmas.

ABLE provides Christmas lighting and bunting for public occasions in Alcester and to do so relies on donations and grants from public, voluntary and private individuals and organisations.

Chris Newitt, chairman of ABLE said: “This year was a resounding success. We had more than 1,500 ducks take part in the race, with £200 going to the winner.

“The event is run entirely by volunteers, and I want to thank everyone who attended and helped support our annual fund-raiser. We upped the price of our ducks this year so are hoping for a decent total.”

All the proceeds from the race will go towards new Christmas lights to get the town sparkling for the festive season.  ABLE will be holding its annual light switch-on in November.
