Feckenham firework display cancelled as Storm Ciaran set to bring in more rain

THE annual Feckenham firework display has been called off.

With Storm Ciaran expected to bring torrential rain and following hot on the heels of Storm Babet, organisers Feckenham Cricket Club say the ground is just too waterlogged.

“The cricket ground was flooded a week ago and because of the shortage of parking in the village the field next to it, which we use for parking, would quickly become a quagmire,” said Bob Gordon, chair of Feckenham Cricket Club.

“I’ve been involved with the firework display for the past eight years and although we’ve had rainy events in the past we’ve never had to cancel in my time.”

He estimated the water table had risen to about a quarter of an inch below the surface and with Storm Ciaran expected to hit over tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday and continue into the weekend, the situation was untenable.

The free to enter Feckenham firework display normally attracts a crowd from far and wide.

It’s paid for by members of the club holding bucket collections and the hope is now that a display of some sort can go ahead later in the year, possibly for New Year, when the ground has dried out.

Feckenham Cricket Club plays in division 3 of the Worcestershire County League and is keen to attract new players and sponsors.

The Met Office says Storm Ciaran will be preceded by a squally cold front which will move eastwards across southern and southeast England bringing bursts of heavy rain and coastal gusts of 60-70mph, mainly from Dorset eastwards.

However the low pressure system will bring heavy rain to many other parts of the UK too, including the Midlands with rain between Wednesday evening and Friday morning with 20mm to 25mm possibly falling quite widely.
