The 15th Century bridge at Bidford is to remain closed ‘indefinitely’ until work to assess and repair the damage has been completed.
But the vehicle that has obstructed the single carriageway since early yesterday morning (Saturday) has been moved sufficiently to allow pedestrian access.
In a message posted to Bidford Forum social media group, Councillor Daren Pemberton said: “There is significant damage to the bridge and will take some time to be assessed, and work itself will also take some time. As a result the bridge will be closed to vehicles indefinitely.”
He added that the white Uber taxi cannot be removed safely until tomorrow (Monday August 11), allowing today’s Duck Race to go ahead as planned.
He gave thanks to the county surveyor, the Warwickshire clear-up team, Bidford police and Big Meadow security personnel for their hard work.
A full structural survey will need to be conducted by Historic England and the Warwickshire County Council in the coming weeks to assess the damage before specialist repair work can be undertaken.
Temporary road signs are now at the Barton Crossroads and traffic island at Bidford Fire Station.
