Getting ready to toast Redditch's twin towns

Tristan Harris 18th Oct, 2024   0

A NEW project to celebrate the link Redditch has had with its twin towns will be launched at the town’s library tomorrow (Saturday).

It will be a double celebration for the group as it has just found out it will receive £2,000 funding for the project from Redditch Borough Council’s ReNEW scheme.

Redditch has five twin towns – Auxerre and Gruchet in France, St Elizabeth in Jamaica, Mtwara, Tanzania and Gujar Khan in Pakistan.

Next year will be the 40th anniversary of the Redditch and Mtwara link and October is Black History Month.

At tomorrow’s event, the locally-renowned and popular Otis will be performing live, there will be a display on each of Redditch’s twin towns and there will be children’s activities.

Everyone is welcome to the event and the organisers are looking forward to seeing as many people as possible .

A Redditch youth worker – Veronica Allen – who helped get the twinning off the ground will be acknowledged – her son Evroy will be at tomorrow’s get-together and there are plans to launch an award in her name to recognise the good work of young people from the town.

The twinning group will be sharing something of all the cultures represented by its twins, through music, dancing and food throughout the day. Exhibitions will also be displayed and one or two historic films will be shown.
