A TALK on old pubs and hostelries around Alcester was one of the fascinating lectures which drew a full house to the town hall last weekend.
Attendees were thirsty for knowledge of the many long-gone drinking houses.
The event, part of a one-day history festival, was organised by Alcester and District Local History Society (ADLHS) to mark its 50th anniversary year.
And it also featured an exhibition of photos and documents revealing the town’s history over the millennia.
The project was hailed a great success by ADLHS chair Alan Godfrey who said: “Our intention was to give the public a taste of some of the photos and documents held in our archive, built up over many years.
“There was so much interest in the exhibition and our helpers were kept busy answering questions, especially as many visitors were new to Alcester.
“Our three talks were well-attended and we hope to have persuaded our audiences to come along to our regular monthly talks at St Benedict’s High School.
“There is no doubt that the people of Alcester and surrounding district have a great deal of fascination with all aspects of local history.”
He expressed his gratitude to all the society members who helped during the day with mounting the exhibition, the talks, and refreshments.
ADLHS’s next talk ‘Bidford, Booze and The Bard’, at 7.30pm on Wednesday, November 13, examines some legends surrounding William Shakespeare.
Guest speaker Roger Pringle is a lecturer, writer, publisher and former director of Stratford’s Shakespeare Birthplace.
The talk is in the school’s sixth-form centre and admission costs £4 for visitors.
Refreshments are available.
