ARMISTICE Day (Monday, November 11) was marked in Redditch with a short but poignant service at the war memorial in Plymouth Road.
The service was led by Revd Canon Paul Lawlor and attended by members of the Redditch Royal British Legion, additional veterans, councillors, including mayor Coun Juma Begum, representatives from the emergency services and members of the public.
The commemoration was also attended by young people and children from Birchensale Middle School who attended for the first time since Covid-19 pandemic with their headteacher Emma James.
Pupils laid their wreaths and watched teaching assistant Amy Gray play the Last Post and Reveille on cornet.
A two-minute silence at 11am marked the time in 1918 when the guns fell silent on the Western Front during the First World War.
Mrs James emphasised how important it was for the pupils to attend and pledged they would be back next year.
She said: “They hear about Remembrance Day and actually coming and visiting makes them more aware as it contextualises it for them.
“We did a big assembly in school and participating in the service helps us to remember how important it is and that it commemorates the people of Redditch who lost their lives fighting for us.”
