REDDITCH MP Chris Bloore has backed a campaign launched by animal charity the Blue Cross to address critical dog welfare issues.
In its Pet Manifesto, the charity is calling on the government to implement a more robust framework around dog ownership, as it feels the current legislation often contains loopholes which can be exploited.
The manifesto includes the introduction of a system of registration and licensing for all those who breed and sell dogs to ensure full traceability and increase transparency.
The Blue Cross is also calling for an end to breed specific legislation, which aims to ensure dogs are bred with the breeds’ health in mind, rather than aesthetics such as a flat nose.
The charity is deeply concerned about the growth in popularity of brachycephalic breeds of dogs, such as pugs, French bulldogs, and bulldogs.
These breeds suffer from inherent, and often significant, health and welfare issues such as breathing difficulties, obesity, recurring skin infections and eye diseases.
As well as responsible breeding, the Blue Cross is vying to bring greyhound racing to an end and ban shock collars in England.
At an event in Parliament, Mr Bloore showed his support for the charity.
He said: “As a proud cat owner and advocate for responsible pet ownership, I emphasised my commitment to improving animal welfare, a cause close to the hearts of many constituents. At the event, I met rescue dog Martha and saw first hand the transformative work Blue Cross provides.
“I am fully behind their manifesto and look forward to collaborating with the Blue Cross and other organisations to enhance animal welfare standards in Redditch and across the UK.”
A Blue Cross spokesperson said: “A lack of comprehensive and effective enforcement means those who flout the law often evade justice and instead make large profits at the expense of dogs’ health and welfare.
“This manifesto charts the course of a dog’s life, highlighting the areas where legislative change is needed to ensure our pet dogs can lead a healthy and happy life.”
