Students bring the drama to Redditch town centre with medieval mystery

YEAR 10 students from Tudor Grange Academy brought drama and comedy to a bitterly cold Redditch town centre with their performance of a famous medieval mystery play.

The GCSE performing arts pupils enacted The Second Shepherd’s Play, a comedy that premiered around 1500 in which three shepherds have to track down one of their lambs that has been stolen by a local thief.

They eventually find it hidden in a cradle disguised as a baby in the home of the sheep-stealing couple.

Once they have been punished, the play switches to the familiar Nativity story of shepherds being told of the birth of Christ.

The comical theatrics were conducted under the watchful eye of Hannah Wolstencroft who said: “This is our take on a medieval passion play, which we are performing on the site where two medieval roads met.

“This was a great opportunity for the students to have a look at medieval life.”

The play is a comedy in which three shepherds have to track down one of their lambs that has been stolen.

The project received support from Midland Actors Theatre and was funded by a ReNew grant from Bromsgrove District and Redditch Borough Councils.

Coun Jane Spilsbury, representative for Matchborough and Woodrow on Redditch Borough Council, added: “Tudor Grange Academy Redditch has a long history of championing the performing arts.

“It is great to see young people bringing theatre to the town centre and showcasing their talents.”
